Dana Point

Known as the world’s whalewatching capital, Dana Pointis a five-star resort town where nature thrives. The seaside community lies in the southern portion of Orange County, and has become apopular destination for surfing, sailing, and other water activities.

Dana Point was incorporated in 1989 and is home to around 34,000 residents. Almost seven miles of coastal bluffs run through its prominent coastline, the most notable of which is the Headlands. Overlooking Dana Point Harbor, this promontory is known to be one of Orange County’s most significant landmarks. Laguna Niguel, Laguna Beach, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano are located in the city borders.

The city was named after lawyer and author Richard Henry Dana, Jr. In his memoir, Two Years before the Mast,Dana documented his passage from Boston to California aboard the Pilgrim. It was also in this book that he called Dana Point, which was formerly known as Capistrano Bay, the “most romantic spot in California.”

Thousands of visitors frequent the harbor for its plethora of recreational options. Other activities include sport fishing, parasailing, and kayaking. From the harbor, you can access the 62-acre Doheny State Park, where you can explore tide pools and ride the waves.
  • Ocean Institute– Located on a secluded beach, the institute is perfect for an outing with the family. The Ocean Institute is home to a variety of educational sea exhibits. It is accessed from Dana Point Harbor.
