History: Newport Beach Real Estate

There are two well-known piers in Newport Beach. Newport Pier is the older of the two and was originally known as McFadden Wharf which was built during the late 1880s and named after James McFadden and his younger brother Robert. Newport Pier is now a California Historical Landmark, and is a popular spot offering spectacular ocean views.

Balboa Pier, was built in 1906 and is located closer to the Balboa Peninsula’s entrance channel and was constructed as a sister project of the Balboa Pavilion. To attract lot buyers both structures were built to coincide with the completion of the Pacific Electric Railway Red Car Line from Long Beach to the Balboa Peninsula. When the rail line opened on July 4, 1906, nearly one thousand beach-goers took the one-hour train ride on the red cars from Los Angeles to enjoy Newport Beach, Balboa Pavilion and Balboa Pier. • Newport Beach developed into a tourist and recreational boating community following the opening of the San Pedro Harbor in Los Angeles in 1899
• James McFadden, originally from Scotland, arrived in California in 1868 and immediately saw the potential of the Newport Beach area. He dreamed of creating a town by dividing his land and selling it to as many who would buy Newport Beach Real Estate
• In 1902, James McFadden sold his Newport Beach Real Estate, town-site and about half of the Peninsula to William S. Collins, who saw Newport Bay’s resort and recreation potential.
• The City of Newport Beach was incorporated on September 1, 1906, making it the 6th city to be incorporated in Orange County California.
